With so many online shopping cart options, finding what is best for your business can be overwhelming. Each week ShopTab features one online shopping cart, interviewing the featured cart’s developer to provide an opportunity to learn about why their cart may be right for your business.
This week Robin Kohli, founder and lead developer of E-Junkie, was kind enough to grant us an interview. E-Junkie is an online shopping cart made with customer convenience in mind with its easy to set up, easy to use, and easy to maintain software.
E-Junkie launched in the end of 2003. Its operations are small and personal with all support and development handled by a strong team of 5 employees (including Robin) out of Tucson, AZ. After working as a freelancer for a few years, Robin began working on E-junkie, to meet his own requirements and later to fulfill the desire of building an easy to use e-commerce engine.
Today E-Junkie has evolved to offer an easy to use, centrally managed service, digital storage and delivery for files and codes, copy-paste Buy Now and Shopping Cart buttons, shipping and packaging calculators, and sales tax & VAT calculators to many satisfied clients all around the globe.
Q: Why did you launch E-Junkie?
A: In 2003, I was selling a small utility for which I was accepting payments via PayPal and then I had to mail it out each time I had a sale. Tired of rolling out of the bed in middle of the night to send an e-mail, I started looking for free, commercial solutions to automate this. Customizing an open source shopping cart solution available at that time would have been an overkill and the commercial solutions like Kagi etc. were shopping cart+digital delivery+payment processing all rolled into one with a hefty price tag.
Deciding that I only want to part with a percentage of my sales with the payment processor (I was using PayPal) and not with the technology provider, I wrote my own solution to automate the delivery. At that time it was just that, a digital delivery solution for me. Then I implemented it for a few musician friends and gradually it became a generic solution that could be used by anyone. In 2006, we added the “FatFree” shopping cart and that’s when E-junkie really took off.
Q: What makes E-Junkie unique?
A: We are a full service shopping cart provider, so we have all the features like custom discount codes, affiliate network etc. but the reason we stand out is that E-junkie is a fast and easy solution that does not require any technical know-how. If you have a blog, website, or are selling something even on your social network, E-junkie gets you going before you finish your coffee.
Q: How many products will your eCommerce platform allow?
A: There is no limit on the number of products. Merchants can add thousands of products in E-junkie.
Q: What is the cost for E-Junkie’s service?
A: Our plans start at $5/month. The monthly fee varies according to the size of the merchant’s catalog.
Q: What are E-Junkie’s future plans for development or additional features?
A: Currently, we are very focused on making it technologically easy for the merchants to be able to sell anything online. We are also focused on increasing the conversion rate as our UI for buyers is really slick. So basically we are a really good fit for merchants who have something to sell and an audience. In the near future, we’ll be expanding on our marketplace capabilities, so apart from the technology, we’ll make available an audience to the merchants to we can help them generate sales.
Q: How is support handled for E-Junkie customers?
A: We provide e-mail based support 7 days a week. Although we’ve been planning to offer 24×7 chat and phone-based support, it’s not very easy to simply hire a lot more people and just do it. Our support so far has been very personalized and our support guys come from a technological background and understand e-commerce really well.
